Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting for forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the son of God, tell these stones to become bread”. Jesus Answered “it is written: Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”– Matthew 4:1-4.
Food, water, clothing and shelter these are the basic necessities of life. Jesus by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3 in this passage equated the word of God to a basic necessity of life. I have heard and read over this verse many times, each single time not grasping all the lessons it teaches. I don’t think a 500 word blog is going to it any justice but nonetheless I have decided to use this verse as the centre point for all things that follow in this blog.
Faith, life and excellence this is the culture of our Church, C7 and ‘Lead in the way that other may follow’ is a phrase I’ve heard from our Senior Pastor, Jason Cask. Not only do these phrases sound cool but it’s also not too difficult to learn and regurgitate them without much effort. But if we take a moment to dissect and understand what these phrases actually stand for it becomes truly powerful.
Jesus, right at the beginning of his leadership, demonstrates this culture of faith, life and excellence. Even when the devil presented Jesus with a question of his identity “if you are the son of God…” Jesus’ self-identity does not shake. He does not even feel the need to acknowledge this challenge, when the devil presented Him with another substitute to enhance His life with, Jesus knew who sustained His life and He had faith His Father would sustain His life.
He responded to the temptation with faith, life and excellence. His identity was not in the condition of his life but rather on the revelation that He is the Son of God, which gave Him the ability to respond with excellence, even in the midst temptation. His faith was not on earthly things but rather on the word of God and He knew that the source of His life was His Father.
Jesus shows us the culture to lead with. He led in the way that we may follow. Accelerate presents us with the opportunity to put these things into practice. It gives us the opportunity to put our faith into action by committing our self to a year of learning and growing. It helps us to understand the word of God with the help of those who have spent a significant amount of time increasing their knowledge of God so that we may lead full of life. We can explore our identity in Christ by constantly paying heed to words of our teachers, telling us who we are in Christ so that we may lead with a standard of excellence which we will not let drop even in the most trying of times.
