Fearless – Sheonagh Struthers

Peace found alongside a babbling brook.
Strength present in the wind.
New life that the rains bring.
Passion encompassed within a raging wildfire.
Majesty emanating from sky-scraping mountains.
Eternity displayed by the ever-expanding universe.

I love that God’s characteristics are captured within and displayed throughout creation. I recently had the opportunity to go on a Safari and during this amazing adventure I had the privilege of seeing what I believe is one of the most majestic wild animals that God created, the lion.

As I looked out the jeep at this phenomenally beautiful creature I was reminded of God’s power and authority. At this moment, our strategy came into my mind – First, Fast and Fearless, with the latter playing on my mind. I found myself meditating on the truth that God has commanded us all to live fearlessly, to be bold and courageous as explained in Joshua 1:9 (NIV): “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.

Being part of Accelerate for the past 7 months has caused me to grow in my knowledge of who God is, which in turn has taught me more about who I am and subsequently opened my eyes to the future that God has for me and all believers. John 10.10 states “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” We are called to live an abundant life. Abundant means overflowing, inexhaustible, lavish, generous… the list goes on!

How many of us know that without discipline and keeping our eyes on Jesus we can default into our old way of thinking and live a life that is way below what God intended us to live. Wishing away our weeks to reach the weekend, wandering through life with no passion or purpose. Living off the dregs of life. As John 10.10 explains, the enemy wants to rob us of the abundant future God has for us. As I gazed in awe at the lion, I was encouraged to be bold, to step up and fight for the unique purpose and destiny God has for me.

I remember initially, as we passed over the threshold into the lion enclosure , the game ranger warned us to keep all limbs inside the jeep as the lions had lost their fear of man and would attack at any moment if provoked or if his pride felt threatened. Just like these lions, we are called to fiercely defend and cherish what is important to each of us in life – our dreams and aspirations for the future, seeing our friends and family won to Christ, having an impact for Jesus, spreading the Gospel…. Don’t lose that fight inside of you that says: “ No – I WILL stand up and fight for this because I will accept nothing less. This is what God has called and saved me for.”

“The righteous are as BOLD as a lion” (Proverbs 28:1). It’s time to be fearless, to step up and live BOLD.
